How To Calculate The Weight of Carbon Steel Pipe?

To calculate the weight of a carbon steel pipe, you can use the following formula:

\[ \text{Weight of Pipe} = \text{Outer Diameter} \times \text{Thickness} \times \frac{\pi}{4} \times \text{Density of Steel} \]

Where: \( \text{Outer Diameter} \) is the measurement of the pipe's outer circumference (often provided in inches or millimeters),

- \( \text{Thickness} \) is the wall thickness of the pipe (also typically provided in inches or millimeters),

- \( \pi \) is a mathematical constant (approximately 3.14159),

- \( \text{Density of Steel} \) is the density of the carbon steel material, which is approximately 7850 kg/m³ for carbon steel.

First, convert the outer diameter and thickness from inches to millimeters if they are given in inches. Then, use the following steps to calculate the weight:

1. Convert the outer diameter from inches to millimeters: \( \text{Outer Diameter (mm)} = \text{Outer Diameter (inches)} \times 25.4 \)

2. Convert the thickness from inches to millimeters: \( \text{Thickness (mm)} = \text{Thickness (inches)} \times 25.4 \)

3. Calculate the cross-sectional area of the pipe: \( \text{Cross-sectional Area} = \text{Outer Diameter (mm)} \times \text{Thickness (mm)} \times \frac{\pi}{4} \)

4. Calculate the weight of the pipe: \( \text{Weight (kg)} = \text{Cross-sectional Area} \times \textDensity of Steel} \)

For example, if you have a carbon steel pipe with an outer diameter of 10 inches (254 mm) and a wall thickness of 0.5 inches (12.7 mm), the calculation would be as follows:

1. \( \text{Outer Diameter (mm)} = 10 \ 25.4 =254 \text{ mm} \)

2. \( \text{Thickness (mm)} = 0.5 \times 25.4 = 12.7 \text{ mm} \)

3. \( \text{Cross-sectional Area} = 254 \times 12.7 \times \frac{\pi}{4} \approx 2466.5 \text{ mm}^2 \)

4. \( \text{Weight (kg)} = 2466.5 \times 7850 \approx 19,303.275 \text{ kg} \)

So, the weight of the pipe would be approximately 193 kg. Remember to round off the final weight to the desired number of decimal places based on the precision required for your application.
